“The Orb” by Paul White is exactly what the blurb promises. A fast-paced, urban action, speculative fantasy adventure”. I’m a fast reader, so I sped through this novelette at break neck speed. Each page brought more questions. Was the protagonist a man or a woman? Who was pursuing her? Was there more than one person or group intent on gaining possession of the mysterious Orb?
White has done a magnificent job of keeping the pace speeding forward. I found as I read, I read faster and faster. This is definitely a story that requires the reader to put away all disbelief in magic. I never saw the twists and turns as they leaped from paragraph to paragraph, pulling me along, a willing voyeur to the misadventures of this desperate thief.
In few words, White has developed memorable characters, most notably the Orb itself. While much is left unanswered; where did the Orb originate, how did the Librarians acquire it, and why was the protagonist allowed in the Library? But the story moves so swiftly, the questions are forgotten as soon as the next one pops up.
I would love to see this story filled out and taken forward to a full-length novel. There’s a lot of magic left to reveal. How about it Paul White? Does the Orb have more to show us? Until then, I highly recommend “The Orb”; short, fast, and breath taking.
**There are a few minor typos and grammatical errors, but they in no way slow down the pace of this story.**
