As someone who has worked for both non-profits and big corps I think this blog by Carolyn Quinn hits the nail on the head. I had a director who was ex-military and wandered the halls never smiling and rarely responding to a “good morning”. The one after her was as bad. She would lock herself in her office to work on her PhD. She dressed like a Salvation Army reject but had a dress code that was intense. I wpn’t even talk about the little tyrant at the top who resembled Rumplestiltskin and had a personality to match. We were supposed to be helping clients become self-sufficient through our work ready program. Instead we punished them for not working 30 hours a week at minimum wage jobs. Ridiculous.
