Confidence

Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

As far back as kindergarten I was often chosen to take part in school productions. I spoke clearly and easily remembered lines. But it was easy to do that. It wasn’t until the upper grade that I met the real challenge of speaking in front of groups.

One of my first adventures outside of the safety of my school. Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was being displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. My 4th grade class at PS 151 was the first class to view it. As we left the museum after that exciting experience news crews waited to interview us. My teacher, Mrs. Levy, chose me to speak for the class. I didn’t have time to be nervous as it happened so suddenly. To my surprise I spoke well and was completely comfortable. That experience set the stage for my public speaking opportunities for the rest of my life.

I’ve been fortunate to speak in front of very large groups, on radio, on stage, and on television. I’ve interviewed celebrities, spoken to prominent politicians, discussed controversial subjects, and have never felt uncomfortable.

I credit those early school years with giving me the confidence and skills to accomplish these things. I’m 71 years old now and still enjoy speaking to groups and leading discussions.
